Prepping the planter for Spring plant

Some say the most important day of the growing season is the day you put the planter in the field. This statement is made because record yields come from uniform stands where all corn plants emerge within the same 24 hour period. If this type of uniform emergence is not attained, yields can be reduced by 10-25%. Corn plant emergence can be affected by soil temperature, soil moisture, soil preparation, seed depth, seed/soil contact, seed quality, planter performance and planter operation. We have 30-60 days before we start looking for those ideal field conditions so there is plenty of time to get the planter ready to go. I’ve attached a 10 point planter preparation checklist, courtesy of Agriculture.com Staff, that will help in identifying planter mechanical issues and help in preparing the planter for the most important day of the growing season.
